The UX Job Hunt from Meetup of Long Island User Experience
Here is the takeaway from the meetup of Long Island User Experience on Feb. 17. There are many advices that UX job seekers can heed:
- Portfolio may be more important than degrees you've got, or bootcamps you went, It shows your capability and experience, but let us not discount the benefits of all types of education and training.
- Inside your portfolio, show how you solved the real world problems in projects.
- Many junior designers experience the imposter syndrome. There are ways to overcome it.
- If you know/learn visual design in other fields than in UX, it is a valuable asset. It makes you familiarized with typography, layout, color theory, etc. putting you ahead of many who are new to UX.
- Don't try to push away your background. Be it in coding/engineering, research, etc., you can pivot and use your background to your advantage.
- Networking in social media like LinkedIn does help many designers get referrals and opportunities.
- When applying for a job, a job seeker need to strategize. Tailor the resume and add some keywords for the opening position to appear in resume to pass through the screening of recruiters.
