Key Takeaways in Designing User Onboarding Experience
While designing a new app, this time I have a few key takeaways on designing user's onboarding experience. Human beings normally has a short attention span, not to mention when he/she uses an app on a mobile device.
The onboarding experience on the app must be smooth and fluent. Especially the first-time onboarding experience in a compressed time frame can make or break the user's commitment to using the app going forward.
One of primary tasks in designing onboarding experience is to identify the speedbumps that will slow down a user's process. The usual speedbumps a user encounters are creating an account, then input his/her credit card information. But if users are being asking to do something, remember that you have to show them how it will make their experience better. The rewards or benefits they received from the app must outweigh their input. Duolingo is an excellent example in new user's onboarding experience in its app. It will get a new user to try his/her first language learning activity in its app playfully before getting the user to create an account.
As opposed to barrier to entry in Michael Porter's competitive strategy where the barriers should be raised higher to bar the business's competitors from entering the competition, the business should work on lowering the barriers for user to start using its products or services on its app.
